Mono Lake/ Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest/Eastern Sierra
July 25th- 29th, 2016
Eastern Sierra workshop, our focus is the varied landscape of the Inyo
National Forest on the edge of the Great Basin. We will travel
from its lowest point to some of its highest! Here, the
tufas of Mono Lake
and the volcanic cones surrounding the lake will be our first focus.
Nowhere else are the tufa formations as plentiful and varied as the
Tufas of Mono Lake. The lake is also home many lake and shore birds
like Phalaropes, Black Stilts, Herons, and Franklin Gulls. On a
mountain ridge, near its top, live the oldest trees on earth.
Ancient Bristlecone Pines live in one of the most inhospitable places
anywhere! They are varied in size and shape and the weather worn dead
snags will amaze the fantasies of dreams. Depending on the size of our
class and time, we might spend the morning in Devil's
Postpile National Monument and an afternoon in the ghost town of Brodie
SP. Trips also include the hot springs along Hot Creek and
geothermals. Mammoth, California is our home base with plenty of hotels
